電影的前半段是說男主角Guido追求他的理想與愛情，完全沒有理會法西斯主義之下的政府管制。他是一個很有幽默感的人，任何事都會以笑臉迎接，所以劇中有很多笑料。當他遇見一位小學老師Dora便一見鍾情，而Dora也因為他這種幽默感而對他產生好感。後來，他們結了婚，誕下Giosu。Guido開了一間夢寐以求的書店，一家過著幸福的生活。
只可惜，電影後半部份遇上第二次世界大戰，身為猶太人的Guido當然難逃劫數，一家人失散，及後被關入集中營，Guido與 Giosu 被關在一起，而Dora則被關在另一處。在殘酷無比的集中營裡，Guido以玩遊戲的方式讓兒子仍保有童年的快樂及天真，他將Giosu 藏於集中營中，並且經由扮演的方式讓Giosu以為集中營的一切也只是一場遊戲，盡他的一切努力保護他的兒子。很可惜到最後，Guido死於納粹的槍下。而戰事完結後，集中營被解放，Giosu就回到Dora身邊。
雖然，電影前半段的劇情是非常老土，但是令我看得很投入及開懷，真的能引我發笑。而後半段的集中營劇情，與前半段的輕鬆形成強烈對比，令我看此電影時的情緒起伏很大。 Guido那份傾盡全力也要保護兒子的心及對Dora的愛，真的很令人感動。可惜最終他也被殺，在電影末由兒子道出整個故事及讚揚他爸爸的精神，更是全故事最令人感動之處。而男主角亦憑飾演此角而得到1997年度奧斯卡最佳男主角。
