書本圍繞蘭花，主角是編劇，需要將這故事改篇成電影，但發覺這故事不是小說因此很難改篇，而主角亦堅持忠於原著，所以一直處於創作瓶頸。主角是一個比較悲觀的人，沒自信，認為自己很差勁，想做但又不敢去做，每件事在心裡掙扎很久，但最後卻保持原狀，無法突破自己，甚至因此失去很多機會。主角弟弟比主角近於行動派，想做就去做，促使主角去找女作者，以添靈感。
主角見到女作家後，發覺她不是自己想像中的完美女神，與現實有很大落差，他亦從編劇大師那裡學會了人生沒可能是平淡，如果覺得人生是平淡就是白過了時間，沒去了解周邊所發生的一切。這些發現，都要靠主角自己肯踏出第一步，如果沒有弟弟的行動，也不知主角要過多久才能醒覺，就是踏出第一步後，他的人生就豁然不同了。
故事看似平淡，但是這個創作手法頗為特別。Nicolas Cage的演譯真的令我有點衝動去打主角一身，看得我有點咬牙切齒，但當主角肯跨出第一步時，又很想給他一個擁抱。

The real fucking world. First of all, you write a screenplay without conflict or crisis you’ll bore your audience to tears. Secondly, nothing happens in the world? Are you out of your fucking mind? People are murdered every day. There’s genocide, war, corruption. Every fucking day somewhere in the world somebody sacrifices his life to save somebody else. Every fucking day someone somewhere takes a conscious decision to destroy someone else. People find love, people lose it. For Christ sake a child watches her mother beaten to death on the steps of a church! Someone goes hungry, somebody else betrays his best friend for a woman. If you can’t find that stuff in life, then you my friend don’t know crap about life! And why the FUCK are you wasting my two precious hours with your movie? I don’t have any use for it! I don’t have any bloody use for it!Robert McKee
